Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French port cochère.
Etymology: < French port cochère (1611) < porte port n.3 + cochère , apparently the feminine of an adjective *cocher < coche coach n. and adv. + -ier (feminine -ière : see -ary suffix1), with reduction of -ier to -er after -ch-.
