Etymology: Apparently < Plymouth Rock, the name of a boulder in Plymouth Harbor, New England, at which the passengers of the Mayflower are traditionally said to have landed in 1620, perhaps so named on account of the birds' originally having been bred in Massachusetts.

A breed of large domestic fowl of American origin, now typically having ashen or grey plumage barred with blackish stripes, and yellow beak, legs, and feet; a bird of this breed.The name was applied successively to different strains in the 19th cent.
