单词 pole rivet
释义

pole rivetn.

Brit. /ˈpəʊl ˌrɪvɪt/, U.S. /ˈpoʊl ˌrɪvᵻt/
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: an element of uncertain origin, rivet n.3
Etymology: < a first element of uncertain origin (see note) + rivet n.3The first element is unlikely on semantic grounds to be poll adj. (compare sense 1 at that entry), as this and earlier pollard adj. 1, pollard n.2 2, as well as later polled adj.1 5, all mean ‘awnless’. Quot. 1789 alternatively suggests that the first element may be Pole n.3 (compare earlier Poland n.1 4, Poland wheat n. at Poland n.1 1b, although these apparently do not refer to the same variety of wheat). It is also unclear whether the following quot. shows the same word:1744 W. Ellis Mod. Husbandman IV. Oct. i. 10 Duck-bill or Dugdale Wheat. In Essex they call this Grey-poll Rivet.
Now rare.
Bearded wheat. In quot. 1916 used as the name of a particular variety of wheat.
