1. John and Humphry Davy's name for: lead chloride, PbCl2. Obsolete.

1812 J. Davy in Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) 102 185 As this compound, when decomposed by an alkali, affords the protoxide of lead, it may be called plumbane.
1814 H. Davy in Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) 104 69 I heated plumbane (muriate of lead) in sulphurous acid gas, and likewise in carbonic acid gas.
2. Lead tetrahydride, PbH4, an extremely unstable gas; (more generally) any of a (largely hypothetical) series of lead hydrides, analogous to the alkanes, of which PbH4 is the simplest member. Also: any substituted derivative of such a compound.Frequently as a formative element in the names of alkyl compounds of lead, regarded as substituted lead hydrides.

1920 Chem. Abstr. 14 2182 The mol. wt. indicates that it has the double formula [(C8H9)3Pb]2 so that it might be considered as hexa-p-xylyldiplumbane.

1950 N. V. Sidgwick Chem. Elements I. 554 Lead hydride, plumbane, presumably PbH4..was prepared by Paneth in 1920.
