Etymology: Apparently an alteration (after -ade suffix; compare cockade n.) of French plumard small feather broom (1636; now rare; earlier as †plumart (c1480 in Middle French in sense ‘plume’)) < plume plume n. + -art -ard suffix.
Obsolete. rare.
A plume worn by a horse as a mourning accoutrement.
