Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown.Apparently attested earlier as an element in place names. Machispoffil, apparently ‘the poffle of Maccus’, now Maxpoffle in Roxburghshire, is mentioned in a source of 1296. See further A. H. Smith Eng. Place-name Elements (1956) II. 68 for possible examples from the north of England. It is uncertain whether the following shows an otherwise unattested variant of the same word in Middle English:c1450 (?a1400) Parl. Thre Ages (BL Add. 31042) 144 His renttes and his reches rekened he full ofte—Of mukkyng, of marlelyng, and mendynge of howses..Of presanttes of polayle, of pufilis als.
Scottish. Now rare.
