Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin polium.
Etymology: < classical Latin polium, polion a kind of germander, Teucrium polium (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek πόλιον (Theophrastus), perhaps < ancient Greek πολιός grey (see poliosis n.). With sense 1 compare poly mountain n., pellamountain n.The word was evidently reborrowed in the 16th cent.; there is unlikely to be continuity of use with the Old English.
1. An aromatic germander of southern Europe, Teucrium polium (family Lamiaceae ( Labiatae)), which is covered with a felt of whitish hairs; also called mountain poly, poly of the mountain (cf. poly mountain n.). Also (usually with distinguishing word): any of several other herbs of the genus Teucrium. Obsolete.
