Etymology: < play n. (compare play n. III.) + act v. Compare earlier play-acting n., play-actor n.
1. intransitive. To act in or as if in a play; esp. to behave theatrically or insincerely; to pretend, make-believe. Also (rare): to be suitable for acting in a play.
