Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin discalceare , -ed suffix1.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin discalceare discalceate v. + -ed suffix1, originally after French dechaussé (now déchaussé ), use as adjective of past participle of dechausser to remove one's shoes (see dischauce v.).In use with reference to Carmelites ultimately after Spanish descalzo (12th cent.). Compare post-classical Latin discalceus (by-form of classical Latin discalceātus discalceate adj. in some manuscripts of the Salic law), Anglo-Norman and Old French deschauz, Old French, Middle French deschaus, Middle French deschaux, French (now regional: eastern and Walloon) déchaux (c1170), Old Occitan descaus, Portuguese descalço (13th cent.).
Barefoot; without shoes. Also as a postmodifier. Cf. discalceate adj., discalceated adj.Chiefly (sometimes with capital initial) with reference to certain strict orders of Catholic friars or nuns whose members go barefoot or are shod only in sandals.
