Etymology: < acquire v. + -ment suffix. Compare Old French aquerrement , acquirement , Old French, Middle French, French †acquerement action of acquiring something (second half of the 12th cent.; the sense ‘thing which is or has been acquired’ is not paralleled in French), post-classical Latin acquiramentum (13th cent.). Compare earlier acquest n., acquiring n., acquisition n.

a. Usually in plural. A thing which is or has been acquired (in various senses); esp. a personal attainment, an accomplishment (as opposed to an innate gift or talent). Now rare.In quot. 1607: (apparently) a thing gained without effort or volition; a gift. Cf. acquire v. 2.
