Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Podargus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Podargus, genus name ( L. J. P. Vieillot in Nouveau dict. hist. nat. (ed. 2, 1818) XXVII. 151) < ancient Greek πόδαργος swift-footed < ποδ- , πούς foot (see -pod comb. form) + ἀργός swift, probably the same word as ἀργός white, shining (see argil n.).
Ornithology.
A bird of the genus Podargus (family Podargidae), resembling a large nightjar and found in Australia, New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands; a frogmouth; esp. (more fully tawny-shouldered podargus) the tawny frogmouth, P. strigoides.
