Etymology: < scientific Latin Ploïma, order name ( C. J. Hudson and P. H. Gosse Rotifera (1886) I. 26; < ancient Greek πλώϊμος fit for sailing, seaworthy < (Ionic) πλώειν (Attic πλεῖν) to sail (see note) + -ιμος, suffix forming adjectives) + -ate suffix2.Ancient Greek (Ionic) πλώειν represents a lengthened grade of the base of (Attic) πλεῖν to sail (see pleon n.1).
Zoology.
Of or relating to the order Ploima of rotifers that move only by swimming, which includes the majority of rotifer species.
