N.E.D.(1907) takes the word to be an erroneous misreading of plantule , which appears in E. Darwin's Bot. Garden in a passage corresponding to quot. 1800 (see quot. 1791 at plantule n.). Although this may perhaps be a printer's error, quot. 1720 appears to provide independent evidence of the form.
