R. Lankester in Encycl. Brit. XVI. 652/1 If we start from the condition of full eversion of the tube and watch the process of introversion, we shall find that the pleurecbolic variety is introverted by the apex of the tube sinking inwards. 1988 Ann. Entomol. Soc. Amer. 81 316/1 Lankester (1886), describing proboscis eversion in gastropods, stated that there are two basic processes by which eversion takes place. Acrecbolic eversion occurs ‘by a forward movement of the inverted apex of the tube’; pleurecbolic eversion occurs ‘by a forward movement of the side of the tube near its attached base’.
