Hat-making. Now historical and rare.
An oval or circular piece of stiff card or other material used to line the crown of a hat, often bearing the manufacturer's name, trademark, or other design. Cf. tip n.1 2d. hat tip plate n. Obsolete rare a printing plate used to print a design on a hat tip.

Etymology: < hat n. + tip n.2In sense 2, popularized by the American newspaper cartoonist Jimmy Hatlo (1897–1963), whose widely syndicated ‘They'll do it Every Time’ (1929–2008) used ideas submitted by readers, who were often acknowledged with variants on the phrase ‘Thanx and a hat tip to..’, from the late 1940s onwards (see quot. 1948 at sense 2).
