Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: plancher n.
Etymology: Probably an alteration of plancher n. (compare 3), perhaps after an unattested French form; compare Anglo-Norman plancié floor (c1250 or earlier), Old French plancier floor (early 13th cent.; there is apparently no clear evidence that this word survived into Middle French or French).
Architecture.
The underside of the corona of a cornice; any soffit of a cornice.
