Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French plaignant.
Etymology: < Middle French plaignant someone who brings a complaint in court (1259 in Old French; French plaignant ), use as noun of present participle of plaindre (see plain v.). With use as adjective compare earlier plainand adj.In form 'plainant probably apprehended as a shortening of complainant adj.
Chiefly Law. Now rare.
