Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Plateosaurus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Plateosaurus, genus name (H. von Meyer 1837, in Neues Jahrb. f. mineral. Geognosie, Geol. u. Petrefaktenkunde 316) < ancient Greek πλάτη flat or broad object ( < the base of πλατύς : see plat adv.) + -o- -o- connective + -saurus -saurus comb. form.

Palaeontology.

A genus of herbivorous prosauropod dinosaurs of the late Triassic and early Jurassic, being predominantly quadrupedal and comparatively short-legged, with a long neck and tail; (also plateosaurus) a dinosaur of this genus.

1891 Amer. Naturalist 25 435 In 1845, H. v. Meyer introduced the name Pachypodes for the group he had established in 1830, including Iguanodon, Hylaeosaurus, Megalosaurus, Plateosaurus.

1935 R. L. Ditmars Bk. Prehistoric Animals ii. 18 Among the largest was the Plateosaurus, a lizard 20 feet long..and able to rear 12 feet high.

1964 Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) B. 248 110 Vestigial clavicles have been reported by von Huene in the Triassic Plateosaurus.

2002 Los Angeles Times (Nexis) 20 May 12 Before the Jurassic, the biggest dinosaur around was probably something like plateosaurus, a long-necked, two-legged plant-eater 20 feet long.
