Etymology: < Ox- (in Oxford: see Oxford n.) + fam- (in famine n.).
1. A voluntary organization whose aim is the relief of poverty and suffering around the world by means of long-term development aid, emergency relief, and campaigning.The Oxford Committee for Famine Relief held its first meeting in 1942, and was registered as a charity in 1943. The organization gradually became known by its telegraphic address, Oxfam, and formally adopted this name in 1965. Other organizations were subsequently formed under the same name in other countries.
