Etymology: < plagio- comb. form + -stome comb. form, after French plagiostome ( A. M. C. Duméril Zool. analytique (1806) 102). With use as noun compare scientific Latin Plagiostomi (1842 or earlier), †Plagiostoma (attributed to S. Nilsson 1832), as name of this group of fishes.

Having the mouth placed transversely beneath the snout; spec. of or relating to the group Plagiostomi of cartilaginous fishes so characterized, including the sharks and rays. Now rare.
