Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: an element of uncertain origin, vein n.
Etymology: < a first element of uncertain origin (see below) + vein n.The first element is perhaps < ancient Greek πλάτη shoulder blade, specific sense of πλάτη flat or broad object (see Plateosaurus n.; the cephalic vein was used for bloodletting in cases of injury to the shoulder), or perhaps shows a spec. use of plat n.2 or plat adj., or is perhaps related to plat v.3 In later use it was apparently associated with plate n.
Obsolete.
In a horse: the cephalic vein.
