Etymology: < Dutch ploter, plooter fleece or wool cutter (first half of the 15th cent. in Middle Dutch as plōter ; 1769 or earlier as plotter ) < Middle Dutch plōten ploat v. + -er -er suffix1. Compare later ploat v. and perhaps also slightly later plot v.2
Scottish. Obsolete.
Apparently: a worker who trims the nap on cloth.
