Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: proper name Pini , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < the name of the Pini mine, Schneeberg, Saxony, where the mineral was first found + -ite suffix1, after German Pinit ( D. L. G. Karsten Mineral. Tabellen(1800) 28). Compare French pinite (1804 (in a paper published in 1807) or earlier ).
Mineralogy.
A grey-green or brownish mica formed as a pseudomorph by the alteration of other minerals such as spodumene or cordierite.

Etymology: < French pinite (M. Berthelot 1856, in Ann. de chim. et de physique 46 77) < classical Latin pīnus pine n.2 + French -ite -ite suffix1.
Chemistry.
A sweet-tasting carbohydrate, C7H14O6, that is a methyl derivative of inositol occurring in the sap of the sugar pine, Pinus lambertiana.
