Etymology: In sense 1 < post-classical Latin peristoma (1672 in the passage translated in quot. 1689 at sense 1) < peri- peri- prefix + ancient Greek στόμα mouth (see stoma n.). In sense 2 < scientific Latin peristoma (see peristome n.).With sense 1 compare Hellenistic Greek στόμα γαστρός orifice of the stomach (Galen).

Obsolete.
