Etymology: < German Pinipicrin (A. Kawalier in Sitzungsberichte der Kaiserlichen Akad. der Wissensch.: Math.-Naturwissensch. Classe 11 (1853) 350) < classical Latin pīnus pine n.² + German -i- -i- connective + ancient Greek πικρός bitter (see picro- comb. form) + German -in -in suffix¹. Compare French pinipicrine (1856 or earlier).

Chemistry. Now rare.

A bitter glucoside, C₂₂H₃₆O₁₁, obtained from the needles and bark of the Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris, and the leaves of the American arbor vitae, Thuja occidentalis.
