Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Plastid.
Etymology: < German Plastid (1866 in Haeckel, or earlier) < ancient Greek πλαστός formed, moulded (see plastic n.) + German -id < ancient Greek -ιδιον , diminutive suffix (see -idium comb. form). In sense A. 2 after German Plastid (A. F. W. Schimper 1882, in Bot. Centralblatt 12 175).
