Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Hebrew. Partly a borrowing from Syriac. Etymons: Hebrew 'āḇ; Syriac 'āḇ.

Etymology: Originally < post-biblical Hebrew 'āḇ < Akkadian abu fifth month of the year, probably via Aramaic 'āḇ. In later use with reference to the twelfth month of the Syrian year < Syriac 'āḇ (Aramaic 'āḇ) < Akkadian abu. Compare post-classical Latin Ab (in an undated glossary), Aab (8th cent. in a British source), Byzantine Greek ἄβ.The forms Ab, Av reflect the Sephardic pronunciation of the Hebrew word, the forms Ob, Ov its Ashkenazic pronunciations. The β. forms predominate in modern English usage.
