Etymology: < classical Latin piper pepper n. + -ine suffix5. Compare earlier piperine adj. In sense 1 after German Piperin (H. C. Oerstedt 1820, in Jrnl. f. Chem. u. Physik 29 80). Compare French pipérin, pipérine (1821 as piperin, piperine).With sense 2 compare post-classical Latin piperinus (see peperino n.). N.E.D.(1907) gives the pronunciation as (pi·pĕrəin) /ˈpɪpəraɪn/.
1. Chemistry. A crystalline alkaloid obtained from pepper plants (esp. black pepper and white pepper) which is used as an insecticide and to give pungency to brandy; 1-piperoylpiperidine, (OCH2O)H3C6—(CH)4—CO—NC5H10.
