Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pistat-, pistare.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pistat-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of pistare to pound (4th cent.), to bake (from 1298 in British sources), frequentative of classical Latin pīnsere to pound, crush (see pisé n. and adj.); compare classical Latin pistor baker (see pistor n.). Compare also Middle French, French pister to grind, crush (14th cent., now rare), Old Occitan pistar to grind, pound (c1240; Occitan pistar), Spanish pistar to grind, pound (mid 15th cent.).
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To bake (bread, etc.). Only in past participle.
