Having or designating a texture formed by a felted mass of acicular or lath-shaped crystals in a holocrystalline igneous rock.

1888 F. H. Hatch in J. J. H. Teall Brit. Petrogr. Gloss. Pilotaxitic, the name given by Rosenbusch..to a holocrystalline structure especially characteristic of certain porphyrites and basalts. The groundmass of these rocks consists essentially of slender laths and microlites of felspar in felted aggregation, and often presents fluxion phenomena.

1910 Encycl. Brit. I. 965/1 The hornblende- and mica-andesites have groundmasses composed mainly of acid plagioclase with little orthoclase or glassy base (pilotaxitic groundmass).

1993 Jrnl. Petrol. 34 262 The groundmass of most samples is hyalopilitic to pilotaxitic with abundant plagioclase and pyroxene needles and minute Fe–Ti oxides in a brown glass matrix.
