Etymology: < question n. + mark n.1 With sense 1 compare post-classical Latin signum interrogativus (sic; 15th cent. or earlier), French point d'interrogation (1550 in Middle French as point d'interrogacion ), German Fragezeichen (early 16th cent.). Compare earlier note of interrogation n. at note n.2 1a, query n.2 2, interrogative point (see point n.1 16a), etc.
