Etymology: < post-classical Latin plenipotentiarius (c1375 in a British source) < plenipotentia plenipotency n. + classical Latin -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare French plénipotentiaire (1690), Spanish plenipotenciario (in Embajador Plenipotenciario (1532 or earlier)), Italian plenipotenziario (a1646 or earlier).
