Etymology: Old English wéofud, -od, earlier wéo-, wíobud, < wéoh-, wíoh-, wíh- (wíg-) holy, sacred + béod (masculine) table. In Old English, however, the second element very commonly appears as -bed (in the forms wío-, wéo-, wíg-, wíbed) and was evidently identified with the noun bed, being sometimes inflected -beddes, etc.; in agreement with this the usual gender of wéofod is neuter. As an independent word the first element in Old English is a noun meaning ‘idol’, corresponding to Old Saxon wîh, Old Norse vé holy place, sanctuary, and Old High German wîh (Middle High German wîch, German weih-), Gothic weihs adjective, holy.
