Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps a variant of pilcorn n., or perhaps ultimately < pilch v. (although if so the k is unexpected in a Hampshire form). For Meredith's account of how he encountered the word see Notes & Queries (1976) 296. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation as (pi·lkinz) /ˈpɪlkɪnz/.
