Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek πῖον rich milk, use as noun (short for πῖον γάλα ) of neuter of ancient Greek πίων (adjective) fat ( < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit pīvan- fat) + -scope comb. form. Compare German Pioskop (1906 or earlier). Compare earlier lactoscope n. at lacto- comb. form 1.

An instrument for estimating the purity of milk, in which the milk is viewed through the clear part of a glass plate and its colour compared with that of the other parts of the plate, which are painted in various shades of grey.The 1881 U.S. patent (no. 241,655) for Heeren's apparatus described it as a lactometer.
