Origin: Of multiple origins. A borrowing from Greek. Partly also a borrowing from French. Partly also a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Greek πιλίδιον; French pilidium; Latin Pilidium.
Etymology: Ultimately < ancient Greek πιλίδιον little cap < πῖλος felt cap (see pileus n.) + -ίδιον -idium comb. form. In sense 1, via French pilidium (A. P. de Candolle Théorie élém. de la bot. (1815) 393). In sense 2, via scientific Latin Pilidium, genus name (J. Müller, probably 1846, in Vossische Zeitung; also 1847, in Arch. f. Anat. u. Physiol. 159). In sense 3, via scientific Latin Pilidium (A. T. von Middendorf Reise in den äussersten Norden u. Osten Sibiriens 1843 u. 1844 (1851) II. i. 214; compare also S. Forbes and S. C. T. Hanley Hist. Brit. Mollusca (1853) II. 440).
1. Botany. A hemispherical apothecium that disintegrates into a powdery mass of spores, seen in certain lichens. Obsolete. rare.

1839 Boston Jrnl. Nat. Hist. 2 246 This differs so considerably from the other species with almost sessile pilidia, that it would almost seem to constitute a distinct genus.
2. Zoology. Also † Pilidium. The early, free-swimming, cap-shaped larva of nemertean worms of the order Heteronemertea (formerly thought to be a distinct genus).

1868 Amer. Naturalist 2 37 The egg hatching results in a larva (Pilidium) which is totally unlike the parent, and from the body-wall of which a small worm-like animal grows and separates, leaving the bulk of the Pilidium to perish.

3. Zoology. In form Pilidium. Either of two former genera of molluscs, now called Piliscus (a genus of sea snails) and Iothia (a genus of limpets). Now disused.
