Etymology: In α. forms apparently partly < pilled adj.1 + garlic n. and partly < peeled adj. + garlic n.; in β. forms apparently partly < pill v.1 + garlic n. and partly < peel v.1 + garlic n. Compare pilpate n., and also pilcorn n. and related words, pilledow n.
a. Originally: a bald head; a bald-headed person. In later use also: a pitiable, lowly, or foolish person; a shabby or unkempt person. Frequently used without article, as though a proper name.In the sense of ‘a bald-headed person’, often with allusion to venereal disease as the supposed cause (see quots. 1619, 1671 at α. ).
