Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ῥητίνη , -lite comb. form¹.

Etymology: Irregularly < ancient Greek ῥητίνη resin (see retinite n.) + -lite comb. form¹. Apparently coined by T. Thomson (compare quot. 1836), and usually attributed to him, although first used in print by C. U. Shepard (see quot. 1835).

Mineralogy. Now rare.

A variety of serpentine having a resinous lustre.
