Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French phthore.
Etymology: < French phthore (1819 or earlier as phtore ) < ancient Greek ϕθορά destruction < an ablaut variant of the base of ϕθείρειν to destroy, to corrupt: see phthartic adj.), so called on account of the corrosive action of hydrofluoric acid.French phthore is attributed to A. M. Ampère (1775–1836).
