Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ϕθινο- , ϕθίνειν , -plasm comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕθινο-, combining form (in e.g. ϕθινόκαρπος having lost its fruitfulness) of ϕθίνειν to decay, waste away (see phthisis n.) + -plasm comb. form (see quot. 1871). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (fþi·noplæz'm) /ˈfθɪnəʊplæz(ə)m/.
Pathology. Obsolete. rare.
C. J. Williams' term for: caseating granulomatous inflammation, esp. of tuberculosis; caseation.

1871 C. J. Williams Pulmon. Consumpt. i. 6 All are due to the presence of various kinds of phthinoplasm, a withering or decaying modification of the proper plasma or formative material of the body. [Note] I have found it necessary to coin this word,..to give expression to one of the leading ideas of this book, and to avoid the common use of the word tubercle.
