Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin phrātria; Greek ϕρατρία.
Etymology: < classical Latin phrātria or its etymon ancient Greek ϕρατρία tribe, clan, kinship group, each of the three subdivisions into which an Athenian phyle was divided < ϕράτηρ (see phrator n.) + -ία -y suffix3.
1. Ancient Greek History. A kinship group composed of families with a notional common ancestor, having a corporate identity and certain corporate responsibilities and functions; each of the three subdivisions into which an Athenian phyle was divided; a clan.
