Etymology: < Middle French, French pignolat (1312 in Old French), either < Old Occitan pinhol , variant of pinhon (see pignon n.1) + Middle French, French -at -ate suffix1, or < an unattested Old Occitan *pinholat (compare Occitan pinholat , Old Occitan pinhonat pinionade n.). Compare pinionade n. and further parallels cited at that entry.
Obsolete. rare.
A paste, conserve, or confection made of pignons or pine nuts.
