Origin: A borrowing from Malay. Etymon: Malay pikul.
Etymology: < Malay pikul load as heavy as an ordinary man can lift, 100-catty weight. Compare Javanese pikul a shoulder-load, as much as a man can carry on a shoulder-pole, 100-catty weight (mid 9th cent.).With forms without final -l compare Dutch pico (1596 in the passage translated in quot. 1598), Portuguese pico (1554), Spanish†pico (1585 in the passage translated in quot. 1588).
A unit of weight used in China and South-East Asia equal to 100 catties (approx. 133 lb, 60.4 kg).
