单词 picaro
释义

picaron.

Brit. /ˈpɪkərəʊ/, U.S. /ˈpɪkəˌroʊ/
Forms: 1600s picardo, 1600s pickeroe, 1600s– picaro.
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish pícaro.
Etymology: < Spanish pícaro (c1545; earlier in the phrase pícaro de cozina boy serving in the kitchen for left-overs (1525)), further etymology uncertain and disputed: see further J. Corominas Diccionario crítico etimológico de la lengua castellana(1985) at pícaro and Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch at *pikkare for summary and discussion. Compare Italian picaro (1606; < Spanish), Portuguese pícaro (17th cent.). Compare slightly later picaroon n.1Among the suggestions that have been made are etymologies from Spanish picar to prick, pierce (see pick v.1), or from French picard Picard n.1, or from Old Occitan (Gascon) picarel knavish, vile (1160–70 in an isolated and uncertain attestation), but all of these explanations encounter difficulties.
Frequently in Spanish contexts: a rogue, a scoundrel. Also: the hero of a picaresque novel.
