Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Picariae , -an suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Picariae, former order name (C. L. Nitzsch 1820, in Deutsches Archiv f. Physiol. 6 255; < Picus , genus name (see piciform adj.2) + -ariae , plural of -aria : see -ary suffix1) + -an suffix. With use as adjective compare piciform adj.2

A bird of the former order Picariae, which included birds from several modern orders such as the woodpeckers, kingfishers, cuckoos, trogons, mousebirds, and nightjars. rare.
