Etymology: < Piast (also as Piastus, Pyast, Pyastus), the name of the legendary founder of the first Polish royal dynasty (c850) and subsequently (from 17th cent. in Polish sources) denoting a member of this dynasty. In plural forms denoting the dynasty itself.In form Piasto perhaps after Spanish; in plural form Piasti probably after post-classical Latin. The name of the founder of the dynasty occurs earlier in an English context in the following quotation:1615 E. Grimeston tr. P. d'Avity Estates 650 After the death of Popyel, the Polonians did chuse for their duke a countriman called Pyast [Fr. Pyast], who made honie.
