Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pigritia.
Etymology: Apparently a specific use of classical Latin pigritia laziness, sluggishness ( < pigr- , piger lazy (perhaps < the same Indo-European base as faken adj.) + -itia -ice suffix1), after sloth n.1 (see sloth n.1 4).Contrary to the following quot., Spanish pigricia is apparently only attested in sense ‘laziness, sluggishness, negligence’ (1385 or earlier):1642 T. Fuller Holy State iv. iv. 256 The beast in Brasil, which the Spaniards call Pigritia, which goes no farther in a fortnight then a man will cast a stone.
