Origin: A borrowing from Polynesian languages.
Etymology: < cognate forms denoting the plant in several Eastern Polynesian languages, e.g. Hawaiian pia, Marquesan pia, Rarotongan pia, Tahitian pia.
A tall, coarse, perennial monocotyledonous herb, Tacca leontopetaloides (family Taccaceae), probably native to South-East Asia and grown for its starchy tubers on many Pacific islands. Also: starch produced from the tubers of these plants (also called Tahiti arrowroot, Polynesian arrowroot).
