Etymology: < phosphorus n. + -al suffix1, with insertion of -e- , perhaps after adjectives in -eal (e.g. sulphureal adj., etc.). Perhaps compare scientific Latin phosphoreus (see phosphoreous adj.). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (fǫsfōə·riăl) /fɒsˈfɔːrɪəl/.
Obsolete.
Of or relating to phosphorus; resembling or suggestive of phosphorus. Also figurative.
