Etymology: Apparently < Dutch Provimi (apparently so named in the 1930s, although the word is apparently not recorded in dictionaries of Dutch) < pro- (in proteïne protein n.) + vi- (in vitamine vitamin n.) + mi- (in mineraal mineral n.), with reference to the nutrients contained in the formula.

Chiefly North American.

A proprietary name for: a formula (typically milk-based) with vitamin and mineral supplements, fed to a calf in order to increase the quality and tenderness of its meat (as veal). Also: veal from a calf that has been fed this formula. Frequently attributive, esp. in Provimi veal.
